Kothamangalam the Gateway to the High Ranges. The town serves as a taluk and amunicipality for Ernakulam district in southern state of Kerala. Until recent past, the town was also a very important trading center for spices and hill produce. Kothamangalam is known for its old Christian churches and its prominent educational institutions.

Kothamangalam occupies a prominent place in the ancient history of Kerala. According to some historians, the 'Kotha' in the name must have been the official name of the Cheras who ruled Kerala in the first millennium. There is also an opinion that Thrikkariyoor (Karur), a village 3 km north of Kothamangalam town was the capital of Cheras, but this is not widely accepted. Thrikkariyoor came into being after it was considered as a holy temple of Cheras. Nearby Cheramala, on the bank of river periyar is considered to be the summer palace of Cheras. The ruins are still visible at the hill top. St.Thomas is believed to have preached in this place and converted about 240 Brahmin families to the Christian faith.
